United States Department of the Interior, National Register of Historic Places Oaklana, home of the Tyler family since 1825 stands in the center of a well-landscaped five-acre grove of oak trees on the north side of North Carolina secondary state road 1249 on the outskirts of the village of Roxobel. John Edward Tyler (1850-1930) son of Perry Cotten Tyler. He was educated at a preparatory school at Franklinton, North Carolina, before the Civil War and was a student at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In addition to his farming interests, Mr. Tyler, a scholar of Latin and Greek, taught at the Roxobel Academy. He was a published poet and author; after his death a volume of his poems was privately printed entitled "Bertie at Gettysburg and Other Poems". He obtained patents on his numerous inventions involving farm equipment, ordnance, and mechanical tools. Known for his legal expertise, Mr. Tyler served as a judge of the Inferior Court of Bertie County for many years. Southern Historical Collection no 04810 Tyler Family Papers, 1737-1990s. Papers of the Tyler family include 18th-century financial and legal papers of Moses Tyler and his sons, Perry C. Tyler and Richard Tyler; papers, 1872-1906, and an account book, 1877-1881, of John E. Tyler; and an unidentified account book, 1901, 1909, 1912. Included are a receipt, 1785, for the purchase of a slave and a slave bill of sale, 1859. The papers of John E. Tyler are primarily related to patents and sales of his inventions of a straw cutter, a gun cartridge, a saw with spirit level and plumb attached, an improvement on revolving fire arms, an invisible sub-marine torpedo boat, a motor apparatus, and an improved fence post for wire fences. John E. Tyler's other correspondence is chiefly about political topics, such as support for candidates and formation of a new county from Bertie, Hertford, and Northampton counties. Also included are a few items, 1737-1793, relating to the Warr family of Northampton County. The additions of September 2002 and November 2004 contain materials from a later period in John E. Tyler's life and relate to historic preservation, family history, and other topics.
